As an infant feeding specialist, this is what I do day in day out — supporting parents with breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, weaning onto solids, and healthy digestion. It’s my bread and butter.

Families often receive well-intentioned advice, but not all of them reflect what truly supports a baby’s growth, comfort, and development. Sometimes advice leans on outdated practices, is geared toward waiting until things are bad before acting, or focuses on simply “getting through” the newborn stage instead of helping babies thrive during it. And often, the bigger picture — how feeding shapes comfort, digestion, and development short- and long-term — isn’t fully considered.

Have you been trying for 3 months? 6 months? A year? 4 years? …and the results are the same?

Here’s the problem: picky eating often looks the same on the surface, but the reasons behind it can be completely different.

👉🏼 In some children, it reflects patterns in the mealtime environment or approach. With the right adjustments — applied consistently — their eating expands over time.

Colic is a term for prolonged, inconsolable crying — but it’s not a diagnosis.

Colic can be exhausting — for both baby and parents — but the good news is colic doesn’t mean you have to “wait it out.”

In this case, we combined:
🍼 Feeding assessment and latch correction to improve milk transfer and reduce air intake
🤲🏾 Parent-friendly exercises to support function and comfort between sessions

Support systems start with the right people — and knowing when to refer.
Lactation specialists are FEEDING specialists. We are trained to know what’s normal, what’s not, and what to do when things aren’t going well. When something falls outside our scope, we refer to the right health professional — because that’s what sustainable, safe care looks like.

We are not paediatricians. We don’t replace them. But we are trained specifically in feeding — from anatomy and milk transfer to positioning, latch, oral function, swallowing, and so much more. This is what we do all day, every day.

Every baby is different. What worked for your first child, your nephew, or your friend’s baby might be inappropriate — even dangerous — for yours.

That’s why every baby should be seen by a lactation specialist within the first week of life — whether breastfeeding or not, whether feeding is perceived to be going well or not. Because early, specialist support can change everything.

If we want to truly prioritise breastfeeding, we must create systems that connect families to the right expertise from day one.

It looks like play—but it’s designed to improve how the tongue, lips, jaw, and airway work together.

In this clip, Mia is doing a belly breathing exercise with a tongue depressor between her lips. This helps strengthen lip seal, promote nasal breathing, and support the coordination of muscles needed for chewing, swallowing, and clear speech.

Myo is age-specific and symptom-specific:

Craniosacral therapy does many things — but for neurodivergent children, its most powerful effect is on the nervous system.

A calm nervous system is a regulated one.
And when a child’s body no longer feels like it’s buzzing, overstimulated, or stuck in fight-or-flight, the shift can be significant.

In autistic children, I often see:
✔️ Less stimming, such as repetitive vocalisations or hand flapping
✔️ Reduced sensory seeking, like mouthing objects
✔️ Decreased hyperactivity
✔️ Less self-injurious behaviour, like biting
✔️ Greater connection, presence, and independence
✔️ And in some cases, a complete fading of certain habits

For Iyolla’s son: In our first few sessions, I spent most of the time chasing him across the room to keep up with his desired pace. 👟👟 Now he sits for therapy with minimal to no redirection — and sometimes even lays down. 🧘🏾‍♀️ That’s regulation.

For parents, it can be hard to watch their child struggle to simply exist in their own body.

CST helps them settle into themselves — creating ease in daily life, making school and social experiences more manageable, and opening the door to other therapies. Whether it’s feeding therapy, speech therapy, or ABA, a calm nervous system makes it possible for the child to engage, focus, and truly benefit from the support they’re receiving.

Here’s what isn’t a myth. When the tongue doesn’t have full range of motion, compensatory or dysfunctional patterns present themselves. There are many signs and symptoms that are highly correlated to tongue ties and they can present differently across the ages. They include:

• Breastfeeding difficulties (e.g. inadequate milk transfer)
• Bottle feeding difficulties (e.g. chewing the nipple)
• Speech difficulties (e.g. delayed or unclear speech)
• Solid feeding issues (e.g. picky eating, gagging)
• Oral hygiene challenges (e.g. early tooth decay)
• Jaw development issues (e.g. crowded teeth, high palate)
• Airway concerns (e.g. mouth breathing, snoring)
• Health concerns (e.g. frequent ear infections, nasal congestion)

These symptoms can vary in severity, and not every child (or adult) with a tongue tie will present with all of them. However, early functional assessment is essential - especially when multiple areas of life are being affected.

With specialised training in tongue tie management, I support families through a combination of lactation counselling, feeding therapy, craniosacral therapy, and myofunctional therapy. Treatment may include therapy alone or in combination with surgical release, depending on clinical findings.

For many autistic children, the world is loud, fast, and unpredictable — and their own body can feel just as overwhelming. Behaviours like toe-walking, mouthing, spinning, and hand-flapping are not purposeless — they’re self-regulation tools or expressions of internal discomfort.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch therapy that that works directly with the nervous system to support regulation. It’s often used alongside traditional therapies — or as a first step when a child is too dysregulated for structured intervention. For children who are highly dysregulated or overwhelmed, CST can help them reach a baseline of regulation that makes other therapies more accessible.

If your baby seems uncomfortable, arches their back, wakes frequently, fusses during feedings or the rest mentioned—it could be reflux, even without visible spit-up.

Silent reflux occurs when stomach contents move up the esophagus but don’t result in spitting up. Instead, the acid irritates the lining of the esophagus, which can be harder to diagnose because reflux isn’t always visible.

While silent reflux is often linked to an immature digestive system, physical tension from birth—such as a long labour or C-section—can make the issue worse. Tension in areas like the diaphragm, esophagus, and abdomen can make it harder for your baby to keep milk down comfortably.

Many assume babies will “outgrow” reflux, but leaving it untreated can allow the underlying issue—whether from physical tension or digestive immaturity—to persist, often showing up as refusal of feeds, short feeds, or for older children, picky eating and grazing as the child grows. They rightly make the connection between eating and discomfort.

Untreated reflux can also lead to more serious conditions like GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), a chronic and more severe form of reflux that can cause additional symptoms and long-term discomfort.
