Four years ago, I started Raising Good Eaters because I wanted families to have somewhere to turn when feeding wasn’t going the way they expected.

A big part of that came from living it myself.

My journey started with breastfeeding my daughter. I asked for help in the hospital, but no one referred me to a lactation professional. After discharge, I asked for help again and was told I needed to be more patient.

Looking back, there were real reasons feeding was difficult — poor milk transfer, feeding fatigue, difficulty maintaining a seal, and a lip and tongue-tie that I later identified.

I didn’t need to try harder. I needed the right support and someone to recognise that I needed it.

That experience stayed with me — and became a huge part of why Raising Good Eaters exists.

Four years later, what started with breast and solid feeding has grown into supporting families with oral function, myofunctional therapy, craniosacral therapy, airway concerns, development, regulation and more.

And one thing hasn’t changed: when you come to me with a goal, your goal becomes my goal. I’m incredibly invested in the families who trust me with their care.

Four years in, and I still absolutely love what I do. 🩵

Sometimes it’s positioning. Sometimes it’s milk supply. Sometimes it’s infant oral function, tongue mobility, tension, or another feeding issue. Sometimes it’s a combination of several factors.

This World Breastfeeding Week, let’s strengthen what we know works: listening to mothers and connecting families with timely lactation support.

Because when a parent says, “Something doesn’t feel right,” the right response isn’t, “Try harder.”

It’s, “Let’s get you the help you need.”

I’m getting fewer of the 🤢 faces when he tastes food, and he seems to be getting more used to the different flavours.

More bites are actually making it into his mouth now… although the floor is still getting most of it 😂

He’s still not consistently taking in much and is still quite cautious with food, but he’s getting the hang of it.

Water, on the other hand, he has loved from day one.

He’s taking far fewer bites and showing me signs that he’s becoming overwhelmed, like rubbing his eyes (not because he’s tired) and becoming fussy after just a few minutes.

The good news? As a paediatric feeding therapist, I know these are signs to adjust our approach—not to keep pushing.

This is exactly why I’m so passionate about supporting families from the very beginning of their weaning journey.

Starting solids isn’t just about knowing what to feed. It’s about making every bite count with nutrient-dense meals, recognising your baby’s cues, and adapting before small challenges become bigger feeding difficulties.

Many of the families I work with tell me they noticed from the very first week that feeding didn’t feel right, but they hoped their baby would “grow out of it.” Months later, they’re dealing with food refusal, stressful mealtimes, and a child who barely eats.

Early support can make all the difference.

If your baby’s solids journey looks different from someone else’s—or even from an older sibling’s—that doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Every baby is unique. The key is recognising what they’re communicating and responding accordingly.

Six months. 🤍

Tomorrow my son turns 6 months old, which means two big milestones.

We reached 6 months of exclusively feeding at the breast, and he begins his journey with solid foods.

When it came time to introduce a bottle, I kept telling myself, “Next week.”

Then next week became the week after.

Eventually I realised I wasn’t procrastinating—I simply didn’t want to.

I loved the closeness of feeding him at the breast. The quiet moments, the comfort, the connection. Knowing this chapter is beginning to change feels a little bittersweet.

As a Paediatric Feeding Therapist, I know there are many wonderful ways to feed and nourish a baby. Every family has different circumstances, and there is no one “right” journey. This was simply the one that felt right for ours.

I’m also incredibly grateful to my body—for growing this beautiful little boy and continuing to nourish him for the past six months. Sometimes I stop and think how amazing our bodies are.

Now it’s time for a new adventure.

Here’s to messy faces, new flavours, tiny bites, and watching him discover the joy of food. 🥄💛

Here’s the problem: picky eating often looks the same on the surface, but the reasons behind it can be completely different.

Support systems start with the right people — and knowing when to refer.
Lactation specialists are FEEDING specialists. We are trained to know what’s normal, what’s not, and what to do when things aren’t going well. When something falls outside our scope, we refer to the right health professional — because that’s what sustainable, safe care looks like.

We are not paediatricians. We don’t replace them. But we are trained specifically in feeding — from anatomy and milk transfer to positioning, latch, oral function, swallowing, and so much more. This is what we do all day, every day.

Every baby is different. What worked for your first child, your nephew, or your friend’s baby might be inappropriate — even dangerous — for yours.

That’s why every baby should be seen by a lactation specialist within the first week of life — whether breastfeeding or not, whether feeding is perceived to be going well or not. Because early, specialist support can change everything.

It looks like play—but it’s designed to improve how the tongue, lips, jaw, and airway work together.

Craniosacral therapy does many things — but for neurodivergent children, its most powerful effect is on the nervous system.

A calm nervous system is a regulated one.
And when a child’s body no longer feels like it’s buzzing, overstimulated, or stuck in fight-or-flight, the shift can be significant.

In autistic children, I often see:
✔️ Less stimming, such as repetitive vocalisations or hand flapping
✔️ Reduced sensory seeking, like mouthing objects
✔️ Decreased hyperactivity
✔️ Less self-injurious behaviour, like biting
✔️ Greater connection, presence, and independence
✔️ And in some cases, a complete fading of certain habits

For Iyolla’s son: In our first few sessions, I spent most of the time chasing him across the room to keep up with his desired pace. 👟👟 Now he sits for therapy with minimal to no redirection — and sometimes even lays down. 🧘🏾‍♀️ That’s regulation.

For parents, it can be hard to watch their child struggle to simply exist in their own body.

CST helps them settle into themselves — creating ease in daily life, making school and social experiences more manageable, and opening the door to other therapies. Whether it’s feeding therapy, speech therapy, or ABA, a calm nervous system makes it possible for the child to engage, focus, and truly benefit from the support they’re receiving.
